馬 的 故 事

French general Lafayette participated in both the American and French revolutions. One day at the height of the French Revolution a group of his admirers stopped his carriage in the street, unhitched his horses and pulled the vehicle to its destination.
Several weeks later, Lafayette was asked whether he had been pleased by the gesture. “Yes, it was delightful, delightful, but one thing disturbs me a little,” he replied, pausing reflectively. “I never saw anything more of my horses.”
It is worthwhile to note that, during the Napoleonic Wars, French soldiers complained that, though they were often hungry, there was always food for Napoleon’s favourite horse, Nicoll.

拉 法 埃 脫 本 是 法 國 貴 族 ， 卻 放 棄 貴 族 身 分 ， 給 予 手 下 奴 隸 自 由 。 美 國 獨 立 戰 爭 爆 發 後 ， 他 捐 鉅 款 支 持 ， 並 親 率 軍 隊 抗 英 ， 曾 呼 籲 華 盛 頓 解 放 奴 隸 ， 只 是 華 盛 頓 沒 有 照 辦 。

奧 斯 德 立 茲 戰 役

In the battle of Austerlitz in 1805, Napoleon’s 68000-strong army outmanoeuvred and defeated a Russo-Austrian army of almost 90000. It was one of Napoleon’s greatest victories. A famous yet frightful episode transpired during the Allied army’s retreat: Russian forces that had been defeated by the French right withdrew south towards Vienna via the Satschan frozen ponds. French artillery pounded towards the men, but Napoleon redirected his gunners to fire at the ice. The men drowned in the viciously cold ponds, dozens of artillery pieces going down along with them.

Transpire 原 意 是 「 （ 事 情 ） 被 人 知 道 」 ， 但 也 有 人 用 來 說 「 發 生 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） When it transpired that he had been using a prostitute, the governor had to resign （ 那 州 長 召 妓 的 事 被 人 知 道 了 ， 不 得 不 辭 職 ） 。 （ 2 ） What transpired during my absence? （ 我 不 在 時 ， 發 生 了 什 麼 事 ？ ） 留 意 以 transpire 說 「 發 生 」 ， 本 是 錯 誤 用 法 ， 雖 然 今 天 字 典 多 有 收 錄 ， 不 少 人 仍 然 視 為 不 當 。 要 避 免 「 用 字 不 當 」 之 譏 ， 可 改 用 happen 、 occur 、 take place 等 說 法 。

After the battle of Austerlitz, which left Napoleon the uncontested master of Europe, Napoleon’s words to his troops were full of praise: “Soldiers, I am pleased with you!” He provided two million golden francs to the higher officers, 200 francs to each soldier, and gave large pensions to the widows of the fallen. Orphaned children were adopted by Napoleon personally and were allowed to add “Napoleon” to their names.
Upon receiving news of the devastating defeat suffered by the coalition forces, British prime minister William Pitt pointed to a large map of Europe on the wall. “Roll up that map,” he ordered. “It will not be wanted these ten years.” His prediction was perfect; Napoleon was defeated at Waterloo ten years later.

英 國 首 相 威 廉 ． 庇 特 聽 到 聯 軍 大 敗 的 消 息 ， 指 牆 上 一 幅 歐 洲 大 地 圖 ， 叫 人 「 把 地 圖 捲 起 。 以 後 十 年 ， 都 不 會 要 這 幅 地 圖 了 」 。 他 的 預 言 十 分 準 確 。 十 年 之 後 ， 拿 破 崙 在 滑 鐵 盧 戰 敗 。

The fallen 直 譯 是 「 倒 下 者 」 ， 一 般 指 戰 死 沙 場 的 將 士 ， 例 如 ： The kind woman buried the fallen after the battle （ 戰 後 ， 那 善 心 的 女 人 安 葬 陣 亡 將 士 ） 。
