兩 句 新 聞 英 文

最 近 讀 英 文 報 刊 ， 見 到 以 下 兩 句 ， 先 生 認 為 正 確 嗎 ？ （ 1 ） Diana, Princess of Wales, thought Mohamed Fayed was spying on her during her final stay on his luxury yacht, her sister told the inquest into her death has heard 。 （ 2 ） Power cuts have intensified the ordeal inflicted so many 。
謹 先 把 兩 句 翻 譯 如 下 ： （ 1 ） 英 國 王 妃 戴 安 娜 的 姊 姊 告 訴 戴 安 娜 死 因 調 查 陪 審 團 說 ， 戴 安 娜 最 後 一 次 置 身 穆 罕 默 德 ． 法 耶 的 豪 華 遊 艇 上 ， 覺 得 行 動 遭 法 耶 窺 探 。 （ 2 ） 電 力 中 斷 ， 令 許 多 人 苦 上 加 苦 。
第 一 句 her sister told the inquest into her death has heard 這 一 截 的 inquest 既 是 told 的 受 詞 （ object ） ， 又 是 had heard 的 主 詞 （ subject ） ， 這 樣 一 身 二 役 當 然 不 合 文 法 ， 應 改 為 her sister told the inquest into her death 或 the inquest into her death has heard 。 作 者 寫 has heard 的 時 候 ， 顯 然 忘 了 前 面 已 有 her sister told 三 字 。 新 聞 報 道 寫 作 匆 忙 ， 忙 中 犯 錯 自 然 難 免 ， 不 必 苛 責 。
第 二 句 作 者 則 誤 用 了 inflict 一 字 。 Inflict 是 「 加 於 」 、 「 使 承 受 」 的 意 思 ， 可 以 帶 一 個 直 接 受 詞 （ direct object ） ， 再 用 on 帶 出 一 個 間 接 受 詞 （ indirect object ） ： 直 接 受 詞 指 使 某 某 承 受 的 事 物 ， 間 接 受 詞 指 承 受 該 事 物 的 某 某 ， 例 如 ： The communists have inflicted untold calamities on the Chinese / Untold calamities have been inflicted on the Chinese （ 共 產 黨 令 中 國 人 受 盡 苦 難 ） 。 讀 者 說 的 那 一 句 ， 應 改 為 Power cuts have intensified the ordeal (which was) inflicted on so many 。

世 界 各 地 選 手 、 十 分 緊 急

The contestants (around / in / all over) the world all gathered here （ 世 界 各 地 選 手 齊 集 這 ） 一 語 ， 應 用 哪 個 介 系 詞 （ preposition ） ？
這 一 句 不 知 是 不 是 錄 自 英 文 試 卷 或 作 業 ， 無 論 如 何 恐 怕 不 足 為 法 。 正 確 說 法 是 ： Contestants from all over the world are gathered here / Contestants are gathered here from all over the world 。 All over the world 是 「 在 世 界 各 地 」 ； 要 說 「 來 自 世 界 各 地 」 ， 須 加 from 字 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） People all over the world were shocked by the news （ 那 消 息 令 世 界 各 地 的 人 震 驚 ） 。 （ 2 ） The convention was attended by delegates from all over the world （ 世 界 各 地 都 有 代 表 出 席 大 會 ） 。
此 外 ， 句 子 前 半 截 既 說 all over the world ， 後 半 截 就 不 應 重 複 all 字 ； gather 是 「 聚 集 」 ， 要 說 「 已 聚 集 」 則 宜 用 be gathered ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The demonstrators gathered in Tiananmen Square （ 示 威 者 在 天 安 門 廣 場 聚 集 ） 。 （ 2 ） The demonstrators who were gathered in Tiananmen Square were brutally massacred （ 天 安 門 廣 場 聚 集 的 示 威 者 被 殘 酷 屠 殺 ） 。

政 府 部 門 來 往 的 便 條 （ memo ） ， 如 須 趕 急 傳 真 ， 會 在 右 上 角 寫 Urgent by fax 。 那 urgent 之 前 可 不 可 以 加 very 一 字 ？
Urgent by fax 其 實 可 分 開 寫 作 Urgent — by fax ， 那 urgent 和 by fax 是 兩 個 獨 立 詞 語 ， 文 法 上 沒 有 關 連 。
至 於 urgent ， 要 加 強 語 氣 ， 當 然 可 說 very urgent 、 extremely urgent 等 ， 例 如 ： This is a very urgent fax and must be attended to at once （ 這 分 傳 真 文 件 十 萬 火 急 ， 必 須 馬 上 處 理 ） 。

歷 史 的 創 造 和 紀 錄

留 意 in the distance 和 at a distance 的 分 別 。 In the distance 是 「 在 遠 處 」 ， at a distance 則 是 「 在 一 段 距 離 之 外 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） We watched the crocodiles at a safe distance （ 我 們 在 安 全 的 距 離 看 那 些 鱷 魚 ） 。 （ 2 ） The strayed traveller took heart when he saw a column of smoke in the distance （ 那 迷 途 的 行 人 見 到 遠 處 長 煙 升 起 ， 心 情 振 奮 ） 。

Make history 是 「 創 造 歷 史 」 ， 即 做 一 些 歷 史 上 的 大 事 ， 例 如 ： Alexander Graham Bell made history when he invented the telephone （ 亞 歷 山 大 ． 格 雷 姆 ． 貝 爾 發 明 電 話 ， 翻 開 了 歷 史 新 的 一 頁 ） 。 Make history 當 然 不 是 中 共 式 創 造 歷 史 。 中 共 式 創 造 歷 史 英 文 叫 to fabricate history ， 中 文 叫 「 捏 造 歷 史 」 。

胖 子 和 瘦 漢

The British government once offered a substantial reward for a list of the signatories to the Declaration of Independence, which it regarded as an act of high treason, punishable by death. The portly Benjamin Harrison, who had played an active role in drafting the declaration, professed amusement at the threat. “When the hanging comes,” he told the relatively minuscule Elbridge Gerry, “it will be all over with me in a minute, but you’ll be kicking the air for an hour after I’m gone!”

Portly 是 「 肥 胖 」 的 委 婉 或 幽 默 說 法 ， 多 用 於 男 人 ， 例 如 ： The policeman is a portly man in his forties （ 那 警 察 是 個 四 十 多 歲 的 胖 子 ） 。

Treason 是 「 叛 國 罪 」 ， high treason 自 然 是 叛 國 罪 中 最 嚴 重 的 ， 例 如 ： In new China, it is treason to criticise the government, and high treason to do so in front of foreigners （ 在 新 中 國 ， 批 評 政 府 是 叛 國 罪 行 ， 對 外 國 人 批 評 更 是 叛 國 罪 行 之 中 最 嚴 重 的 ） 。

公 民 社 會 、 公 民 抗 命

Civil society 和 civil disobedience 今 天 一 般 譯 做 「 公 民 社 會 」 、 「 公 民 抗 命 」 ， 竊 以 為 譯 做 「 文 明 社 會 」 、 「 非 暴 力 抗 爭 」 會 好 一 點 ， 先 生 以 為 如 何 ？
Civil society 的 意 思 ， 那 位 讀 者 似 乎 不 大 了 了 。 這 個 詞 沒 有 十 分 明 確 的 定 義 ， 但 一 般 不 是 指 「 文 明 社 會 」 （ civilised society ） ， 而 是 指 可 以 自 由 結 社 的 社 會 。 環 保 、 宗 教 、 學 術 、 勞 工 等 等 自 由 組 成 的 社 團 影 響 力 越 大 ， civil society 就 越 鞏 固 ， 越 有 力 量 和 政 界 、 商 界 抗 衡 ： 政 府 和 商 業 組 織 都 不 是 civil society 的 一 部 分 。 Civil society 譯 做 「 公 民 社 會 」 ， 我 認 為 沒 有 什 麼 不 當 ， 例 如 ： The communists do everything they can to make sure that there is no room for the growth of a civil society in China （ 共 產 黨 盡 力 防 止 公 民 社 會 在 中 國 成 長 ） 。
Civil disobedience 是 指 用 和 平 手 段 反 對 政 府 法 令 。 一 九 三 ○ 年 ， 印 度 聖 雄 甘 地 不 滿 殖 民 政 府 食 鹽 專 利 ， 號 召 同 志 走 到 海 濱 ， 象 徵 式 取 水 煮 鹽 。 當 時 英 國 殖 民 政 府 不 懂 得 像 新 中 國 人 民 政 府 那 樣 ， 出 動 坦 克 車 剿 滅 和 平 示 威 者 ， 結 果 節 節 敗 退 ， 這 應 是 歷 來 最 成 功 的 civil disobedience 例 子 。 Civil disobedience 譯 做 「 和 平 抗 命 」 勝 於 「 公 民 抗 命 」 ： 你 總 不 能 說 武 力 抗 命 的 公 民 不 是 「 公 民 」 。 Civil disobedience today often takes the form of mass demonstrations and processions 即 「 今 天 ， 和 平 抗 命 一 般 以 集 會 示 威 、 遊 行 等 形 式 表 達 」 。
現 代 漢 語 惡 譯 充 斥 ， 不 堪 入 目 ， 值 得 討 論 的 哪 裡 只 是 「 公 民 抗 命 」 一 詞 。
