余 罪 深 矣

After service in the Peninsular War, against the USA, in Greece and at home, British soldier Charles Napier was sent to Sind, in what is now Southeast Pakistan. In August 1842, having annexed Sind to the Empire, Napier sent news of his success via a legendary one-word Latin message:”Peccavi (I have sinned).”
His journal records: “We have no right to seize Sind but we shall do so, and a very advantageous, useful, humane piece of rascality it will be.”

英 國 詩 人 吉 普 林 （ Rudyard Kipling 1865-1936 ） 有 一 首 “Sea to Sea” ， 把 西 方 殖 民 行 動 稱 為 向 其 他 民 俗 傳 遞 文 明 的 善 舉 ， 呼 籲 Take up the White Man’s burden （ 挑 起 白 人 的 重 擔 ） 。 內 皮 爾 表 達 的 ， 正 是 這 種 思 想 。
Send news 是 「 傳 達 信 息 」 ， 另 一 說 法 是 send word ， 你 大 可 以 說 Napier sent word of his success 等 等 。 Word 解 作 「 消 息 」 ， 是 不 可 數 名 詞 （ uncountable noun ） ， 例 如 ： I have just got word of his misfortune （ 我 剛 剛 聽 到 他 倒 運 的 消 息 ） 。

愛 國 英 雄

To provide for quick action in times of emergency, Roman Senators could appoint someone to exercise supreme control over Rome for a specified period, usually six months. Because this leader’s word was law, he was called a dictator.
In 458 BC, the Roman general Cincinnatus was called away from his farm to rescue a Roman legion that was besieged by an Italian tribe. He was made dictator and, marching off to war, defeated the enemy. He then returned to Rome, rejected all rewards, resigned and went back to his farm despite pleas that he remain dictator. Cincinnatus had been dictator for sixteen days.

Dictator 一 字 ， 出 自 拉 丁 文 dictatus （ 講 、 說 ） 。 說 什 麼 人 家 都 要 遵 從 ， 自 然 是 獨 裁 （ dictatorship ） 。 Dictation （ 聽 寫 測 驗 ） 、 dictionary （ 字 典 ） 、 predict （ 預 言 ） 、 contradict （ 反 駁 ） 等 ， 也 都 有 「 說 」 或 「 講 」 的 含 義 。

神 人 ？

Greek philosopher Empedocles （ ca 490-430 BC ） , noted for his knowledge of nature, seems during his lifetime to have pretended to miraculous powers, including the destruction of evil, the curing of old age, and the controlling of wind and rain. Consequently, he became the subject of much ridicule after his death.
A legend has it that his megalomania led him to throw himself into an active volcano, Mount Etna in Sicily, so that his complete disappearance would lead others to believe that he had achieved apotheosis. However, the volcano revealed his deceit by ejecting one of his bronze sandals. Another legend has it that he threw himself in the volcano to prove to his disciples that he was immortal; he believed he would come back as a god among man after being devoured by the fire.

咖 喱 雞 、 紀 念 冊

「 咖 喱 雞 」 香 港 有 些 餐 廳 叫 curry chicken ， 有 些 叫 chicken curry ， 哪 個 說 法 正 確 ？
兩 個 說 法 都 正 確 。 Curry 作 名 詞 ， 指 「 咖 喱 」 或 「 咖 喱 調 味 的 食 物 」 ； 作 動 詞 ， 則 指 「 用 咖 喱 調 味 」 ， 例 如 ： He asked his wife to curry the duck （ 他 叫 妻 子 用 咖 喱 煮 鴨 ） 。 動 詞 的 完 成 式 （ perfect tense ） 即 過 去 分 詞 （ past participle ） ， 可 作 形 容 詞 用 ， 所 以 「 咖 喱 雞 」 、 「 咖 喱 鴨 」 等 叫 curried chicken 、 curried duck ， 但 叫 curry chicken 、 curry duck 也 可 以 。 又 由 於 curry 可 指 「 咖 喱 調 味 的 食 物 」 ， chicken curry 、 duck curry 等 同 樣 是 說 咖 喱 雞 鴨 ， 例 如 ： I had chicken curry and rice for lunch （ 我 午 餐 吃 咖 喱 雞 飯 ） 。
留 意 英 文 有 兩 個 curry 。 指 「 咖 喱 」 的 curry 出 自 印 度 、 錫 蘭 泰 米 爾 語 kari 一 字 ， 原 意 是 「 醬 」 ； 另 一 個 curry 出 自 拉 丁 文 ， 常 和 favour （ 恩 寵 ） 一 字 連 用 ， to curry favour 即 「 阿 諛 取 寵 」 ， 例 如 ： He tried hard to curry favour with the boss （ 他 努 力 巴 結 上 司 ） 。

畢 業 同 學 寫 的 紀 念 冊 ， 英 文 是 不 是 叫 living book ？
Living book 直 譯 是 「 活 的 書 」 ， 確 實 指 的 是 甚 麼 ， 單 看 兩 個 字 ， 不 可 能 斷 言 。 畢 業 同 學 寫 的 紀 念 冊 ， 一 般 叫 autograph book 或 autograph album ， 不 是 living book ， 例 如 ： On the last day of school, she asked me to sign her autograph album （ 上 課 的 最 後 一 天 ， 她 請 我 在 紀 念 冊 上 簽 名 ） 。 Autograph 是 「 親 筆 簽 名 」 ， 簽 名 前 ， 習 慣 會 寫 幾 句 話 表 示 不 捨 、 勸 勉 等 。

凱 撒 之 死

In 49 BC, Roman general Julius Caesar initiated a civil war from which he emerged as the undisputed master of Rome. He was made dictator for life in 44 BC, and heavily centralised the bureaucracy of the Roman Republic. A group of senators, including Caesar’s long trusted friend Brutus, feared his monarchical aspirations, and on the ides of March 44 BC, assassinated the dictator in the Senate House, hoping to restore the normal running of the Republic.
In the accounts of the assassination by Roman historians, Caesar is said to have initially resisted his assassins — until he saw Brutus among them, his dagger drawn. Caesar then ceased to struggle, crying, “You too, Brutus?”

上 期 租 金 、 提 防 三 月 十 五 日

租 屋 須 付 「 按 金 」 ， 請 問 「 上 期 按 金 」 英 文 是 什 麼 ？
香 港 房 東 一 般 要 租 戶 付 「 兩 個 月 上 期 」 。 既 說 「 上 期 」 ， 那 應 是 提 早 繳 付 的 租 金 而 不 是 損 毀 賠 償 保 證 金 ， 租 戶 最 後 兩 個 月 應 不 必 再 交 租 ， 房 子 損 毀 房 東 也 無 可 奈 何 ， 但 這 只 是 照 字 面 解 釋 「 兩 個 月 上 期 」 。 法 律 上 是 不 是 這 樣 ， 我 可 不 知 道 。
而 根 據 字 面 意 思 ， 「 兩 個 月 上 期 」 英 文 是 two months’ rent in advance ， 例 如 ： It is customary in Hong Kong to have a new renter pay two months’ rent in advance （ 在 香 港 ， 新 租 戶 通 常 要 付 兩 個 月 上 期 租 金 ） 。
假 如 那 筆 錢 是 損 毀 賠 償 保 證 金 ， 則 應 叫 damage deposit ， 例 如 ： The landlord demanded a damage deposit equal to two months’ rent （ 或 two months’ rent as a damage deposit ） （ 房 東 要 收 相 等 於 兩 個 月 租 金 的 損 毀 賠 償 保 證 金 ） 。

貴 欄 說 「 Beware the ides of March （ 提 防 三 月 十 五 日 ） 這 成 語 ， 常 用 來 叫 人 小 心 禍 事 將 臨 」 。 Beware 一 字 之 後 是 不 是 應 加 of ？ Ides 為 什 麼 譯 做 「 十 五 日 」 ？ 《 牛 津 高 階 英 漢 雙 解 詞 典 》 找 不 到 這 個 字 。
Beware 一 般 作 不 及 物 動 詞 （ intransitive verb ） ， 須 用 of 帶 出 受 詞 （ object ） ； 不 過 ， 作 及 物 動 詞 （ transitive verb ） ， 則 不 用 of 。 英 國 大 詩 人 杜 萊 登 （ John Dryden ） 筆 下 有 Beware the fury of a patient man （ 堅 忍 的 人 動 怒 ， 你 就 要 提 防 了 ） 一 語 ， 那 beware 之 後 文 法 上 加 of 也 可 以 。
Ides 是 古 羅 馬 曆 法 的 用 語 ， 指 三 、 五 、 七 、 十 月 的 十 五 日 ， 以 及 其 他 月 份 的 十 三 日 。 這 個 字 今 天 並 不 常 用 ， 不 少 字 典 自 然 不 錄 。
