西 方 普 遍 認 為 女 人 頭 髮 最 美 麗 是 金 色 ， 所 以 西 方 童 話 的 女 主 角 一 律 金 髮 披 肩 ， 只 有 白 雪 公 主 例 外 ， 因 為 她 母 親 希 望 生 個 「 肌 膚 白 如 雪 花 ， 兩 唇 紅 如 血 液 ， 頭 髮 黑 如 烏 木 」 的 女 兒 。
一 九 二 五 年 ， 美 國 作 家 安 尼 塔 ． 盧 斯 （ Anita Loos ） 發 表 風 趣 小 說 Gentlemen Prefer Blondes （ 金 髮 美 女 ， 君 子 好 求 ） ， 十 分 暢 銷 ； 兩 年 後 ， 又 發 表 But Gentlemen Prefer Brunettes （ 但 君 子 迎 娶 的 是 棕 髮 淑 女 ） 。 這 大 致 說 明 了 許 多 人 對 金 髮 、 棕 髮 女 郎 的 印 象 ： 金 髮 者 常 獲 男 性 追 求 ， 樂 趣 自 然 較 多 ； 棕 髮 者 性 事 上 沒 有 那 麼 隨 便 ， 自 然 較 宜 做 人 妻 子 。 無 論 事 實 是 不 是 這 樣 ， Blondes have more fun 這 成 語 看 來 會 繼 續 流 傳 。

I would like to read some composition, but time is / has not allowed me to do so 這 一 句 ， 用 is 和 has 意 思 有 什 麼 分 別 ？
這 一 句 大 概 是 說 「 我 想 看 些 作 文 ， 但 時 間 不 許 可 」 ， 用 is 和 has 沒 有 分 別 ， 都 是 錯 誤 說 法 ， 應 改 為 time does not allow me ： 時 間 不 容 許 你 做 某 事 ， 時 間 是 主 動 的 ， 所 以 不 應 用 被 動 語 態 (passive voice ） time is not allowed me ； 又 would like 等 於 wish ， 指 目 前 的 事 ， 所 以 主 動 語 態 （ active voice ） 動 詞 應 用 現 在 式 time does not allow me ， 而 不 是 現 在 完 成 式 time has not allowed me 。
留 意 composition （ 作 文 ） 是 可 數 名 詞 （ countable noun ） ， some composition 應 改 為 some compositions 。

《 經 濟 學 人 》 有 文 章 說 ： It is easy to forget that until ten years ago Southeast Asia was the world’s fast-developing region, winning the sort of investor attention and breathless column inches that China now enjoys 。 請 問 什 麼 叫 breathless column inches ？
Column 這 指 報 紙 文 字 狹 長 的 直 欄 。 要 計 算 某 些 新 聞 獲 得 多 少 報 道 ， 你 可 以 量 度 報 道 的 直 欄 有 多 長 ， 而 這 長 度 以 英 寸 計 算 ， 就 叫 column inch ， 例 如 ： The newspaper devoted no more than six column inches to his death （ 報 紙 只 用 了 六 英 寸 的 短 欄 報 道 他 的 死 訊 ） 。 Breathless 是 「 令 人 透 不 過 氣 的 」 ， 例 如 ： A breathless silence ensued （ 隨 後 是 一 陣 令 人 窒 息 的 沉 默 ） 。 《 經 濟 學 人 》 那 一 句 是 說 ： 「 你 未 必 記 得 ， 不 過 十 年 前 ， 東 南 亞 發 展 之 迅 速 ， 和 今 天 的 中 國 一 樣 ， 贏 得 無 數 投 資 者 垂 青 ， 報 紙 對 該 區 的 報 道 多 得 令 人 應 接 不 暇 。 」

看 史 奴 比 漫 畫 ， 常 見 Good grieve 這 說 法 ， 是 什 麼 意 思 ？
按 grieve （ 使 悲 傷 ） 是 動 詞 ， 例 如 ： I grieved over his death （ 我 為 他 去 世 難 過 ） 。 Good 只 可 用 來 形 容 名 詞 ， 而 grieve 的 名 詞 是 grief 。
Good grief! 即 「 天 啊 ！ 」 用 來 表 達 強 烈 感 情 。 「 好 的 悲 傷 」 為 什 麼 有 「 天 啊 」 的 意 思 ？ 原 來 grief 是 God 的 變 體 。 西 方 人 認 為 ， 憤 怒 、 傷 心 等 時 刻 高 叫 Good God! 有 瀆 神 明 ， 所 以 把 God 改 為 grief 、 gracious 、 Gad 、 Gwad 等 ， 例 如 ： Good gracious, what have you done? （ 天 啊 ， 你 做 了 什 麼 ？ ）

凱 撒 之 死

石 圜 牆 不 是 監 獄

High School Grammar （ 中 學 文 法 ） 有 Stone walls do not a prison make 一 語 ， 是 什 麼 意 思 ？
我 小 時 就 聽 過 High School Grammar 這 本 書 ， 想 不 到 今 天 似 乎 還 有 人 讀 ， 更 想 不 到 文 法 書 會 引 用 詩 人 洛 夫 萊 斯 （ Richard Lovelace ） 的 名 句 。
十 七 世 紀 時 ， 英 國 議 會 和 王 室 鬥 爭 激 烈 。 洛 夫 萊 斯 是 保 王 派 人 物 ， 曾 向 議 會 上 書 陳 情 ， 被 拘 入 獄 ， 獄 中 寫 了 一 首 “To Althea, From Prison” （ 獄 中 致 阿 西 婭 ） ， 說 Stone walls do not a prison make, / Nor iron bars a cage; / Minds innocent and quiet take / That for an hermitage （ 幾 堵 石 壁 ， 不 成 為 監 獄 ； 四 面 鐵 窗 ， 哪 就 是 牢 籠 。 此 心 安 處 ， 石 圜 牆 鐵 欄 杆 無 非 隱 居 之 地 ） 。
Stone walls do not a prison make 即 Stone walls do not make a prison ， 那 make 是 「 成 為 」 的 意 思 。 英 文 有 諺 語 說 One swallow does not make a summer （ 一 燕 不 成 夏 ） ： 看 到 一 隻 燕 子 ， 不 要 就 草 率 下 判 斷 ， 以 為 夏 天 來 臨 。 這 個 make 的 用 法 很 常 見 ， 現 在 再 舉 一 例 ： She will make a good mother （ 她 會 成 為 好 母 親 ） 。
Stone walls do not a prison make 一 語 ， 把 受 詞 （ object ） prison 改 置 動 詞 make 之 前 ， 是 要 和 後 文 的 take 字 押 韻 。 類 似 的 顛 倒 語 法 ， 在 詩 歌 很 常 見 ， 例 如 十 九 世 紀 詩 人 司 各 脫 （ Sir Walter Scott ） 有 一 首 “Hunting Song” （ 獵 歌 ） ： Hounds are in their couples yelling, / Hawking are whistling, horns are knelling, / Merrily, merrily mingle they, / “Waken, lords and ladies gay.” （ 獵 犬 雙 雙 ， 吠 個 不 停 ； 獵 鷹 在 叫 ， 號 角 在 鳴 ， 混 成 一 片 歡 聲 ： 「 起 吧 ， 快 活 的 男 女 。 」 ） Merrily mingle they 即 They mingle merrily 。

不 能 相 比 、 太 好 了

讀 法 院 判 詞 ， 見 到 以 下 一 段 ： I would dismiss this appeal. I do so with sorrow, but my sorrow is nothing to that of all the families and friends of soldiers who have died without knowing whether they were fighting in a just cause. History must be the judge of that 。 看 詞 意 ， 法 官 分 明 是 說 ， 對 於 陣 亡 將 士 的 親 友 ， 不 感 到 難 過 。 法 官 怎 麼 可 以 說 這 樣 的 話 ？
這 位 讀 者 誤 會 了 。 那 法 官 說 的 是 ： 「 我 要 把 上 訴 駁 回 ， 同 時 為 駁 回 上 訴 而 難 過 。 當 然 ， 和 陣 亡 將 士 的 親 友 相 比 ， 我 的 難 過 根 本 不 算 一 回 事 。 那 些 將 士 至 死 都 不 知 道 ， 他 們 是 不 是 為 正 義 而 戰 。 這 問 題 須 由 歷 史 判 斷 。 」
讀 者 誤 解 那 段 文 字 ， 應 是 因 為 不 懂 to 字 用 法 ， 以 為 to 是 「 對 於 」 的 意 思 ， 不 知 道 應 解 作 「 和 … … 相 比 」 。 To 用 於 比 較 ， 是 很 常 見 的 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） This design is inferior to that design （ 這 個 設 計 比 不 上 那 一 個 ） 。 （ 2 ） His craftsmanship is second to none （ 他 的 手 藝 不 比 任 何 人 差 ） 。 （ 3 ） The fibre content of polished rice is low to that of unpolished rice （ 和 糙 米 相 比 ， 白 米 的 纖 維 成 分 很 低 ） 。

Too good to be true 是 什 麼 意 思 ？
Too good to be true 即 「 好 得 不 可 能 是 真 的 」 ， 常 用 來 表 示 難 以 置 信 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） History is proof positive that the proletariat world depicted by the communists is too good to be true （ 根 據 歷 史 鐵 證 ， 共 產 黨 說 的 無 產 階 級 世 界 美 好 得 不 可 能 實 現 ） 。 （ 2 ） He read the tax cut news twice, thinking that it was too good to be true （ 他 把 減 稅 新 聞 讀 了 兩 次 ， 對 這 樣 的 美 事 感 到 難 以 置 信 ） 。

天 還 未 亮 、 精 神 錯 亂

芝 加 哥 樂 隊 有 一 首 歌 ， 題 為 “25 or 6 to 4” ， 是 什 麼 意 思 ？
要 明 白 歌 題 ， 可 先 看 歌 詞 ： Waiting for the break of day / Searching for something to say / Dancing lights against the sky / Giving up I close my eyes / Sitting cross-legged on the floor / 25 or 6 to 4…. （ 等 等 ， 天 還 未 亮 ； 搜 索 枯 腸 ， 還 是 不 知 說 什 麼 。 夜 空 窅 窅 ， 寒 光 閃 閃 。 我 廢 然 閉 上 眼 睛 ， 盤 腿 坐 在 地 板 上 … … ） 這 是 歌 詞 作 者 在 訴 說 才 思 枯 竭 ， 下 筆 維 艱 。 25 or 6 to 4 即 twenty-five or （ twenty- ） six minutes to four o’clock （ 三 時 三 十 五 或 三 十 四 分 ） ： 坐 在 地 板 上 ， 望 望 鐘 ， 仍 然 未 到 天 亮 。

讀 報 看 到 I would say he was out of his mind 一 語 ， 是 不 是 「 我 想 ， 他 意 料 不 到 」 ？
Out of one’s mind 當 然 不 是 「 意 料 不 到 」 ， 而 是 「 精 神 錯 亂 」 ， 也 作 out of one’s senses 或 not in one’s right mind ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） He must be out of his mind to do things like that （ 他 做 那 樣 的 事 ， 一 定 是 精 神 錯 亂 ） 。 （ 2 ） No one in his right mind would take drugs （ 有 理 性 的 人 ， 都 不 會 吸 毒 ） 。 Out of one’s mind 和 成 語 out of sight, out of mind （ 不 在 眼 前 ， 就 不 在 心 中 ） 的 out of mind 完 全 不 同 。 Out of sight, out of mind 是 「 別 久 情 疏 」 的 意 思 。
至 於 「 意 料 不 到 」 ， 一 般 不 用 mind 字 來 說 ， 可 譯 做 not to bargain for 、 to be unprepared for 、 do not expect 等 ， 例 如 ： That was something he never bargained for / he was unprepared for / he never expected （ 那 是 他 絕 對 始 料 不 及 的 事 ） 。
