Petite brides Catherine de Medici and Mary Tudor （ aka Bloody Mary ） both wore high heels to their royal weddings a century before French king Louis XIV was born. But it was the diminutive king that made high-heeled shoes wildly popular among the men of his day. The fashion not only showed off the king’s shapely calves, but it turned the monarch and members of his royal court into people others could literally looked up to. Louis was so fanatical about the power height symbolised that he made it a crime to anyone other than the privileged classes to wear high-heeled footwear.

這 四 句 恐 怕 沒 有 一 句 正 確 。 Suggest （ 提 議 ） 不 可 帶 出 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 （ infinitive ） 」 ， 但 可 用 以 下 兩 個 句 式 ： （ 1 ） I suggest (his) taking a taxi （ 我 提 議 （ 他 ） 搭 的 士 ） 。 （ 2 ） I suggest (to him) that he (should) take a taxi （ 我 （ 向 他 ） 提 議 ， 說 他 應 搭 的 士 ） 。 第 二 句 隨 便 一 點 可 改 作 I suggest (to him) that he takes a taxi 。 要 說 「 不 介 意 我 提 議 你 回 家 吧 ？ 」 英 文 是 Might I suggest that you go home?
留 意 propose 也 是 指 「 提 議 」 ， 除 了 可 用 suggest 的 兩 個 句 式 ， 還 可 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 。 不 過 ， I propose taking a taxi 和 I propose to take a taxi 意 思 有 點 不 同 ： I propose taking a taxi （ 我 提 議 搭 的 士 ） 沒 有 說 明 搭 的 士 者 是 誰 ， I propose to take a taxi （ 我 打 算 搭 的 士 ） 則 表 明 搭 者 是 我 。 換 言 之 ， 「 propose to + 原 形 動 詞 」 這 句 式 ， 表 示 提 議 做 的 事 將 由 提 議 者 去 做 。

「 族 譜 」 的 英 文 是 什 麼 ？
「 族 譜 」 是 genealogy 。 英 文 字 根 （ root ） gen 有 「 家 族 」 、 「 種 族 」 或 「 出 生 」 的 意 思 ， 例 如 heterogeneous （ 不 同 種 類 的 ） 、 gentleman （ 出 身 好 的 男 人 ） 、 genuine （ 非 偽 造 的 、 出 身 純 正 的 ） 、 generate （ 產 生 ） 、 genocide （ 種 族 滅 絕 ） 等 。 -logy 則 當 然 是 「 學 科 」 。 Genealogy 即 「 家 族 學 」 ， 也 可 指 宗 族 繁 衍 的 記 載 ， 例 如 ： To know more about his ancestors, he consulted an expert in the genealogy of Hakka clans （ 他 想 對 祖 先 多 點 了 解 ， 就 向 客 家 族 譜 專 家 請 ） 。

說 「 在 巴 士 上 」 ， 英 文 是 in the bus 還 是 on the bus ？ 兩 個 說 法 我 都 見 過 。
一 般 而 言 ， 說 搭 巴 士 、 電 車 、 火 車 等 ， 介 系 詞 （ preposition ） 用 on ； 說 搭 私 人 車 輛 ， 則 用 in ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） Every morning, he goes to school by bus / on a bus （ 每 天 早 上 ， 他 搭 巴 士 上 學 ） 。 （ 2 ） We are going in his Ford （ 我 們 會 搭 他 那 輛 福 特 汽 車 前 去 ） 。 上 巴 士 ， 叫 get on a bus ； 上 私 人 汽 車 ， 叫 get in a car 。
不 過 ， 巴 士 、 電 車 等 畢 竟 是 盒 子 狀 的 東 西 ， 要 說 「 在 車 」 ， 就 像 說 在 盒 子 （ in a box ） 一 樣 ， 用 in 也 可 以 ， 例 如 ： All the passengers in / on the bus stared at the strangely dressed girl as she got on （ 那 奇 裝 異 服 女 郎 上 車 時 ， 巴 士 上 所 有 乘 客 都 望 她 ） 。

看 美 國 電 視 劇 ， 聽 到 劇 中 人 以 姓 氏 稱 呼 相 熟 的 同 事 ， 姓 氏 之 前 不 冠 以 Mr 之 類 字 眼 。 稱 呼 熟 人 ， 不 是 應 用 名 字 的 嗎 ？
今 天 ， 西 方 人 朋 友 之 間 固 然 多 以 名 字 相 稱 ， 即 使 在 辦 公 室 ， 有 些 上 司 也 會 下 屬 叫 他 的 名 字 ， 以 示 親 切 、 平 等 。 不 過 ， 有 些 男 性 團 體 之 中 ， 成 員 習 慣 以 姓 氏 相 稱 。 這 習 慣 從 前 比 較 流 行 ， 現 在 仍 然 未 廢 ， 例 如 一 些 球 會 、 學 會 成 員 或 會 互 稱 姓 氏 。 當 然 ， 用 姓 氏 還 是 名 字 相 稱 ， 個 別 團 體 有 其 傳 統 ， 不 可 一 概 而 論 。 留 意 上 述 以 姓 氏 相 稱 的 習 慣 ， 在 女 性 之 中 並 不 通 行 。

US President Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal led to his resignation in 1974, but the first major attack on his integrity came much earlier. In 1952, when he was the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket, it was reported that there were some wealthy businessmen who contributed to a slush fund for Nixon’s private use.
The Republicans were thinking of removing him from their ticket when Nixon appeared on televison to defend himself. Having dwelt at length on his humble origins and his advancement in life through his own efforts, Nixon admitted that he had accepted a gift, namely a spaniel puppy. He told how his kids loved the dog and how, whatever anyone said, the family was going to keep it. Thousands of telegrams of support poured into Republican headquarters, and Nixon remained on the Republican ticket.

Need only 和 only need 有 甚 麼 分 別 ？
一 般 而 言 ， 只 要 不 會 引 起 誤 會 ， only 會 用 在 主 詞 （ subject ） 和 主 要 動 詞 （ main verb ） 之 間 ， 例 如 ： Herbert only needs to take care of his son （ 赫 伯 特 只 須 照 顧 兒 子 ） 。 假 如 以 need 作 助 動 詞 （ auxiliary verb ） 則 可 說 Herbert need only take care of his son 。
當 然 ， 嚴 格 而 言 ， only 宜 置 於 所 修 飾 的 詞 語 之 前 ， 放 在 句 子 不 同 地 方 ， 句 子 含 義 或 會 不 同 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） Only Herbert needs to take care of his son （ 只 有 赫 伯 特 須 照 顧 兒 子 ） 。 （ 2 ） Herbert only needs to take care of his son （ 赫 伯 特 只 須 照 顧 兒 子 ） 。 （ 3 ） Herbert needs only to take care of his son （ 赫 伯 特 須 做 的 ， 只 是 照 顧 兒 子 ） 。 （ 4 ） Herbert needs to take care only of his son （ 赫 伯 特 須 照 顧 的 只 有 兒 子 ） 。 （ 5 ） Herbert needs to take care of his only son （ 赫 伯 特 須 照 顧 他 的 獨 子 ） 。

The newly sworn president wound up his inauguration speech with the quotation from the Bible 這 一 句 ， 文 法 正 確 嗎 ？
這 一 句 是 說 「 新 宣 誓 上 任 的 總 統 發 表 就 職 演 講 ， 引 用 《 聖 經 》 那 段 話 作 結 」 ， 文 法 沒 有 錯 。 不 過 ， the quotation from the Bible 指 「 《 聖 經 》 那 段 話 」 ， 除 非 讀 者 已 經 知 道 是 哪 一 段 ， 否 則 the 應 改 為 a 。 A quotation from the Bible 指 「 《 聖 經 》 一 段 話 」 。
此 外 ， 「 新 宣 誓 上 任 的 總 統 」 英 文 通 常 是 說 the newly sworn-in president ， 較 少 說 the newly sworn president 。 Swear somebody in 是 「 使 某 人 宣 誓 上 任 」 ， 多 用 被 動 語 態 （ passive voice ） ， 例 如 ： He was sworn in as president （ 他 宣 誓 就 任 總 統 ） 。

動 詞 之 後 ， 有 時 用 動 名 詞 （ gerund ） ， 有 時 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 （ infinitive ） 」 ， 例 如 He admitted stealing her purse （ 他 承 認 偷 她 的 錢 包 ） 、 She went to swim （ 她 去 游 泳 ） 等 。 怎 樣 決 定 應 用 動 名 詞 還 是 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ？
首 先 要 說 的 ， 是 英 文 一 般 不 會 說 She went to swim ， 而 會 說 She went swimming 。 Go 和 come 之 後 習 慣 用 ing 動 詞 說 從 事 戶 外 活 動 ， 特 別 是 消 遣 活 動 ， 不 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） He went hiking / shopping （ 他 去 遠 足 / 買 東 西 ） 。 （ 2 ） Come jogging / windsurfing with us （ 來 和 我 們 一 起 慢 跑 / 滑 浪 吧 ） 。 當 然 ， 你 可 以 說 She went to see Mary （ 她 去 找 瑪 麗 ） 等 ， 但 這 不 是 指 從 事 游 泳 之 類 活 動 。
至 於 動 詞 之 後 什 麼 時 候 用 動 名 詞 ， 什 麼 時 候 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ， 恐 怕 沒 有 一 條 公 式 可 循 ， 必 須 依 照 各 字 慣 用 法 。 有 些 動 詞 之 後 只 可 用 動 名 詞 ， 有 些 則 只 可 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） Don’t hesitate to tell me if you want help （ 你 假 如 要 幫 忙 ， 儘 管 告 訴 我 ） 。 （ 2 ） I enjoyed reading （ 我 喜 歡 閱 讀 ） 。 這 兩 句 不 可 改 為 Don’t hesitate telling me 、 I enjoyed to read 等 。
有 些 動 詞 ， 其 後 既 可 用 ing 動 詞 ， 也 可 用 「 to + 原 形 動 詞 」 ， 意 思 則 有 同 有 不 同 。 例 如 I hate getting up so early 等 於 I hate to get up so early （ 我 不 喜 歡 這 樣 早 起 ） ， I remembered to close the windows （ 我 記 得 要 把 窗 關 上 ） 卻 不 等 於 I remembered closing the windows （ 我 記 得 已 經 把 窗 關 上 ） 。 這 一 切 都 是 約 定 俗 成 的 用 法 ， 不 可 以 解 釋 ， 要 多 讀 書 才 能 掌 握 。

Richard Nixon was forced to resign the US presidency after Republican spies were caught breaking into the election headquarters of the Democratic Party in the Watergate building in Washington, DC, in 1972.

謹 先 把 兩 句 翻 譯 如 下 ： （ 1 ） 英 國 王 妃 戴 安 娜 的 姊 姊 告 訴 戴 安 娜 死 因 調 查 陪 審 團 說 ， 戴 安 娜 最 後 一 次 置 身 穆 罕 默 德 ． 法 耶 的 豪 華 遊 艇 上 ， 覺 得 行 動 遭 法 耶 窺 探 。 （ 2 ） 電 力 中 斷 ， 令 許 多 人 苦 上 加 苦 。
第 一 句 her sister told the inquest into her death has heard 這 一 截 的 inquest 既 是 told 的 受 詞 （ object ） ， 又 是 had heard 的 主 詞 （ subject ） ， 這 樣 一 身 二 役 當 然 不 合 文 法 ， 應 改 為 her sister told the inquest into her death 或 the inquest into her death has heard 。 作 者 寫 has heard 的 時 候 ， 顯 然 忘 了 前 面 已 有 her sister told 三 字 。 新 聞 報 道 寫 作 匆 忙 ， 忙 中 犯 錯 自 然 難 免 ， 不 必 苛 責 。
第 二 句 作 者 則 誤 用 了 inflict 一 字 。 Inflict 是 「 加 於 」 、 「 使 承 受 」 的 意 思 ， 可 以 帶 一 個 直 接 受 詞 （ direct object ） ， 再 用 on 帶 出 一 個 間 接 受 詞 （ indirect object ） ： 直 接 受 詞 指 使 某 某 承 受 的 事 物 ， 間 接 受 詞 指 承 受 該 事 物 的 某 某 ， 例 如 ： The communists have inflicted untold calamities on the Chinese / Untold calamities have been inflicted on the Chinese （ 共 產 黨 令 中 國 人 受 盡 苦 難 ） 。 讀 者 說 的 那 一 句 ， 應 改 為 Power cuts have intensified the ordeal (which was) inflicted on so many 。

Thank you for attending / having attended my wedding ceremony on 6 January 2008 這 一 句 ， attending 和 having attended 意 思 有 什 麼 分 別 ？
「 Having + 完 成 式 動 詞 」 這 句 式 ， 所 說 事 情 的 發 生 時 間 ， 比 主 要 子 句 （ main clause ） 說 的 時 間 要 早 ， 例 如 ： He said he regretted ever having taken the pornographic photos （ 他 說 後 悔 拍 過 那 些 色 情 照 片 ） 。 句 中 說 的 拍 照 時 間 ， 當 然 比 「 他 說 後 悔 」 的 時 間 要 早 。
不 過 ， 假 如 不 用 「 having + 完 成 式 動 詞 」 ， 讀 者 仍 能 明 白 所 述 事 情 較 早 發 生 ， 那 麼 ， 只 用 動 名 詞 （ gerund ） 也 可 以 ， 例 如 ： He said he regretted ever taking the pornographic photos 。 讀 者 示 下 那 一 句 ， 同 樣 是 having attended 或 attending 都 可 以 ， 意 思 都 是 ： 「 二 ○ ○ 八 年 一 月 六 日 承 蒙 光 臨 我 們 的 婚 禮 ， 至 為 感 謝 。 」

As 可 用 來 帶 出 某 人 的 職 位 。 假 如 該 職 位 是 某 組 織 之 內 獨 一 無 二 的 ， 可 略 去 冠 詞 ， 否 則 冠 詞 就 不 宜 略 去 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） As (the) prime minister of Britain, his words carry weight （ 他 身 為 英 國 首 相 ， 一 言 九 鼎 ） 。 （ 2 ） As a member of parliament, she has a say in the running of the country （ 她 身 為 國 會 議 員 ， 可 參 與 國 家 的 管 治 ） 。 國 會 議 員 數 以 百 計 ， 所 以 a 字 不 應 略 去 。

「 交 通 繁 忙 的 道 路 」 英 文 可 不 可 以 說 是 heavily trafficked roads ？ 查 《 牛 津 高 階 英 漢 雙 解 詞 典 》 ， traffic 作 動 詞 ， 指 「 做 買 賣 」 ， 不 見 有 「 交 通 」 的 意 思 。
動 詞 traffic 除 了 解 作 「 做 買 賣 」 ， 還 有 「 （ 車 輛 ） 行 走 其 上 」 的 意 思 ， 只 是 這 意 思 要 大 一 點 的 詞 典 才 會 收 錄 。 Webster’s Ninth New Collegiate Dictionary traffic 條 下 就 有 heavily trafficked highways （ 交 通 繁 忙 的 公 路 ） 片 語 。 車 輛 稀 疏 的 公 路 ， 則 可 叫 lightly trafficked highways ， 例 如 ： Speeding is common on lightly trafficked highways （ 車 輛 稀 疏 的 公 路 ， 常 有 汽 車 超 速 ） 。

「 受 影 響 的 交 通 」 可 以 譯 做 the affected traffic 嗎 ？ 查 《 牛 津 高 階 》 ， affected 作 形 容 詞 指 「 假 裝 的 」 ， an affected smile 即 「 假 笑 」 ， 然 則 affected traffic 是 否 是 應 解 作 「 假 的 交 通 」 ， traffic affected 才 是 「 受 影 響 的 交 通 」 ？
動 詞 affect 既 可 解 作 「 影 響 」 ， 也 可 解 作 「 假 裝 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The weather can affect our moods （ 天 氣 可 以 影 響 心 情 ） 。 （ 2 ） To please her, Keith affected an interest in cats （ 基 思 為 了 取 悅 她 ， 假 裝 對 貓 有 興 趣 ） 。 過 去 分 詞 （ past participle ） affected 作 形 容 詞 用 ， 無 論 置 於 名 詞 前 後 ， 都 可 解 作 「 受 影 響 的 」 或 「 假 裝 的 」 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） After the accident, a policeman arrived to direct the affected traffic / the traffic affected （ 意 外 事 故 發 生 之 後 ， 一 名 警 員 到 來 指 揮 受 影 響 的 交 通 ） 。 （ 2 ） Even her smile looked affected （ 她 連 笑 容 看 來 都 很 造 作 ） 。
