穿 高 跟 鞋 之 罪

Petite brides Catherine de Medici and Mary Tudor （ aka Bloody Mary ） both wore high heels to their royal weddings a century before French king Louis XIV was born. But it was the diminutive king that made high-heeled shoes wildly popular among the men of his day. The fashion not only showed off the king’s shapely calves, but it turned the monarch and members of his royal court into people others could literally looked up to. Louis was so fanatical about the power height symbolised that he made it a crime to anyone other than the privileged classes to wear high-heeled footwear.

US President Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal led to his resignation in 1974, but the first major attack on his integrity came much earlier. In 1952, when he was the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket, it was reported that there were some wealthy businessmen who contributed to a slush fund for Nixon’s private use.
The Republicans were thinking of removing him from their ticket when Nixon appeared on televison to defend himself. Having dwelt at length on his humble origins and his advancement in life through his own efforts, Nixon admitted that he had accepted a gift, namely a spaniel puppy. He told how his kids loved the dog and how, whatever anyone said, the family was going to keep it. Thousands of telegrams of support poured into Republican headquarters, and Nixon remained on the Republican ticket.

Richard Nixon was forced to resign the US presidency after Republican spies were caught breaking into the election headquarters of the Democratic Party in the Watergate building in Washington, DC, in 1972.
Years later, John Barrett, the first undercover officer to arrive on the scene, explained why the Watergate burglars had been apprehended: the lookout in the Howard Johnson Motel across the street did not see him arrive because he was busy watching on TV the 1958 thriller, Attack of the Puppet People.

人 性 滅 絕

Though many Red Army soldiers were captured by the Nazis during World War II, Stalin refused to swap prisoners with the Germans, declaring that “there are no prisoners of war, there are only traitors to the motherland”.
When Stalin’s oldest son Yakov, commander of an artillery battery, was captured in 1941, Stalin was offered a trade: the return of his son for the release of a German general. Stalin rejected the offer. In 1943, Yakov, suffering from nervous depression, threw himself on the prison camp’s electrified barbed wire. He died almost instantly. A guard shot him four times, but he was already dead.

讀 者 引 述 的 那 條 文 法 ， 恐 怕 不 大 正 確 。 It is the first / second time that （ 那 是 … … 的 第 一 次 / 第 二 次 ） 句 式 ， 其 後 子 句 （ clause ） 的 動 詞 用 現 在 完 成 式 （ present perfect tense ） ； It was the first / second time that 句 式 ， 其 後 子 句 的 動 詞 用 過 去 完 成 式 （ past perfect tense ） ， 那 是 不 錯 的 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） This is the first time (that) I have seen him （ 這 是 我 第 一 次 見 到 他 ） 。 （ 2 ） It was the second time (that) I had been there （ 那 是 我 第 二 次 去 那 ） 。

英 國 《 觀 察 家 報 》 （ The Observer ） 編 輯 羅 傑 ． 奧 爾 頓 （ Roger Alton ） 最 近 辭 職 ， 發 表 文 章 說 ： Last weekend’s edition of the Observer was the last I will put to bed （ 上 週 末 出 版 的 《 觀 察 家 報 》 ， 是 我 負 責 的 最 後 一 期 了 ） 。 句 中 的 will put 不 應 改 作 had put 。

【 代 郵 】 西 竺 先 生 ： 拙 欄 《 死 後 猶 為 戰 鼓 聲 》 文 中 on his deathbed 譯 作 「 臨 終 偃 卧 床 上 」 而 非 「 臨 終 偃 上 」 。 先 生 或 是 上 網 閱 讀 ， 故 有 遺 漏 。

恐 嚇 、 要 求

恐 嚇 人 家 說 「 我 會 玩 死 你 」 ， 英 文 怎 麼 翻 譯 ？
「 我 會 玩 死 你 」 之 類 說 話 ， 應 怎 樣 翻 譯 ， 須 看 上 下 文 ， 無 法 一 概 而 論 。 一 個 育 界 高 官 曾 經 恐 嚇 不 聽 話 的 校 長 ： You’ll have to pay for that （ 你 要 為 此 付 出 代 價 ） 。 這 已 有 「 我 會 玩 死 你 」 含 義 。 同 樣 帶 恐 嚇 意 味 的 （ Just ） You wait! （ 你 等 著 瞧 吧 ！ ） 和 You’ll be sorry for that （ 你 會 為 此 後 悔 的 ） 都 是 常 用 語 。 I’ll make you wish you were never born （ 我 會 令 你 不 想 做 人 ） 更 顯 得 不 懷 好 意 。

The human resources manager has approved your request that you be granted sick leave （ 人 事 經 理 已 經 批 准 你 放 病 假 的 要 求 ） 這 一 句 ， 為 什 麼 說 be granted 而 不 說 are granted ？
這 be granted 是 文 法 上 所 謂 假 設 語 氣 （ the subjunctive ） 。 用 ask 、 demand 、 insist 、 order 、 propose 、 recommend 、 request 、 suggest 、 advisable 、 anxious 、 desirable 、 eager 、 essential 、 important 、 necessary 、 preferable 、 willing 等 字 帶 出 的 that 子 句 （ clause ） ， 表 達 的 是 要 求 或 提 議 ， 動 詞 一 般 用 「 should ＋ 原 形 （ infinitive ） 」 ， 但 美 式 英 文 多 把 should 字 略 去 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） His wife advised that he (should) quit smoking （ 他 妻 子 勸 他 戒 煙 ） 。 （ 2 ） It is essential that he (should) be given his due （ 他 必 須 獲 得 公 平 對 待 ） 。
不 過 ， 隨 便 一 點 ， 這 類 that 子 句 一 般 也 可 用 普 通 時 式 動 詞 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） The manager has approved your request that you are granted sick leave 。 （ 2 ） His wife advised that he quitted smoking 。 （ 3 ） It is essential that he is given his due.

余 罪 深 矣

After service in the Peninsular War, against the USA, in Greece and at home, British soldier Charles Napier was sent to Sind, in what is now Southeast Pakistan. In August 1842, having annexed Sind to the Empire, Napier sent news of his success via a legendary one-word Latin message:”Peccavi (I have sinned).”
His journal records: “We have no right to seize Sind but we shall do so, and a very advantageous, useful, humane piece of rascality it will be.”

光 榮 裡 的 不 光 榮

The Glorious Revolution of 1688 led to the overthrow of James II of England and the establishment of his daughter Mary II and her husband William III on the throne. Lord Halifax was among the first to take up arms on behalf of Mary and William. However, he was revolted by the many who swarmed to demand rewards for their roles in the revolution.
Reminded of the Capitoline geese whose cackling alerted the Roman garrison to a night attack by the Gauls in 390 BC, Halifax drily declared:”Rome was saved by geese, but I do not remember that the geese were made consuls.”

On 23 September 1779, American Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, sailing the ramshackle Le Bonhomme Richard, defeated a convoy of British merchantmen under the escort of the royal naval ship Serapis off Flamborough Head in northeast England.
When Richard Pearson, Serapis’s commander, returned to England, criticism for his defeat was drowned by the enormous praise for his generally heroic conduct.
John Paul Jones, however, was less impressed. Indeed, when he learned that Pearson had been awarded a knighthood, he was rather peeved. “Should I have the good fortune to fall in with him again,” he declared, “I’ll make a lord of him !”

愛 國 英 雄

To provide for quick action in times of emergency, Roman Senators could appoint someone to exercise supreme control over Rome for a specified period, usually six months. Because this leader’s word was law, he was called a dictator.
In 458 BC, the Roman general Cincinnatus was called away from his farm to rescue a Roman legion that was besieged by an Italian tribe. He was made dictator and, marching off to war, defeated the enemy. He then returned to Rome, rejected all rewards, resigned and went back to his farm despite pleas that he remain dictator. Cincinnatus had been dictator for sixteen days.

In 1162, English king Henry Ⅱ , hoping to bring church and state under his control, appointed his adviser and friend Thomas Becket, then England’s chancellor, to serve as archbishop of Canterbury. To his surprise, Becket resigned the chancellorship and fled to France.
After nearly seven years in exile, Becket was reconciled with the king and returned to England. However, he soon foiled Henry’s efforts to exert control over the church. In 1170, while spending Christmas near Bayeux in France, Henry was visited by a deputation of bishops, who apprised him of Becket’s continuing interference. “Will no one rid me of this turbulent priest!” Henry roared.
Taking him literally, four knights crossed the English Channel, hastened to Canterbury, and murdered Becket at the altar of Canterbury Cathedral.
