雖 敗 猶 榮 ？

On 23 September 1779, American Revolutionary War hero John Paul Jones, sailing the ramshackle Le Bonhomme Richard, defeated a convoy of British merchantmen under the escort of the royal naval ship Serapis off Flamborough Head in northeast England.
When Richard Pearson, Serapis’s commander, returned to England, criticism for his defeat was drowned by the enormous praise for his generally heroic conduct.
John Paul Jones, however, was less impressed. Indeed, when he learned that Pearson had been awarded a knighthood, he was rather peeved. “Should I have the good fortune to fall in with him again,” he declared, “I’ll make a lord of him !”

Convoy 是 獲 護 送 的 船 隊 、 車 隊 等 ， merchantman 則 是 商 船 ， 等 於 merchant ship 。 Fall in with 即 「 偶 然 遇 上 」 ， 例 如 ： On my way home, I fell in with an old classmate I had not seen for long （ 回 家 路 上 ， 我 碰 到 很 久 沒 見 的 舊 同 窗 ） 。

也 、 總 共 、 瓶 子

Not only 和 but also 一 般 連 用 ， 但 句 子 假 如 用 了 as well ， 要 不 要 還 用 also ？ 以 下 兩 句 文 法 對 嗎 ？ ─ ─ Some information is not only useless but misleading as well / Some information is useless and misleading as well （ 有 些 資 料 不 但 沒 有 用 ， 還 會 令 人 誤 會 ） 。
Also 、 as well 和 too 都 是 「 也 」 的 意 思 ， 用 了 其 一 ， 自 然 就 不 應 疊 架 屋 ， 再 用 其 他 說 法 ， 例 如 ： He had to look after not only his children, but also his parents / but his parents as well / but his parents too （ 他 要 照 顧 的 除 了 孩 子 ， 還 有 父 母 ） 。 留 意 not only 只 和 but 字 連 用 也 可 以 ： He had to look after not only his children, but his parents 。 加 上 also 、 as well 或 too ， 是 強 調 說 法 。
Some information is useless and misleading as well 一 語 ， 那 as well 也 有 強 調 作 用 ， 文 法 當 然 沒 有 錯 。

In total 和 a total of 意 思 、 用 法 有 分 別 嗎 ？
In total 和 a total of 都 是 「 總 共 」 的 意 思 ， 但 兩 個 片 語 (phrase ） 用 法 不 同 。 In total 在 句 子 是 獨 立 的 ， a total of 則 必 須 和 一 數 目 連 用 ， 例 如 ： A total of eight people were wounded / In total, eight people were wounded （ 傷 者 共 有 八 人 ） 。

小 女 做 英 文 習 作 ， 要 把 This boy is filling a bottle with milk （ 這 男 孩 正 把 牛 奶 裝 滿 瓶 子 ） 改 為 複 數 形 式 。 老 師 的 答 案 是 These boys are filling some bottles with milk ， 那 some 字 是 必 需 的 嗎 ？
Some bottles 即 「 一 些 瓶 子 」 ； a bottle of milk 其 實 改 做 bottles of milk 就 可 以 ， 絕 對 不 必 加 some 字 。
