馬 的 故 事

French general Lafayette participated in both the American and French revolutions. One day at the height of the French Revolution a group of his admirers stopped his carriage in the street, unhitched his horses and pulled the vehicle to its destination.
Several weeks later, Lafayette was asked whether he had been pleased by the gesture. “Yes, it was delightful, delightful, but one thing disturbs me a little,” he replied, pausing reflectively. “I never saw anything more of my horses.”
It is worthwhile to note that, during the Napoleonic Wars, French soldiers complained that, though they were often hungry, there was always food for Napoleon’s favourite horse, Nicoll.

法 國 將 領 拉 法 埃 脫 曾 參 與 美 國 獨 立 戰 爭 以 及 法 國 大 革 命 。 法 國 大 革 命 最 熾 烈 時 ， 他 有 一 天 乘 馬 車 在 街 上 走 ， 被 一 群 仰 慕 者 攔 ， 解 下 馬 匹 ， 合 力 把 馬 車 拖 到 目 的 地 。

值 得 一 提 的 是 ， 拿 破 崙 戰 爭 期 間 ， 法 國 士 兵 抱 怨 說 ， 他 們 經 常 捱 餓 ， 但 拿 破 崙 的 愛 駒 尼 科 爾 總 有 東 西 吃 。

【 附 注 】
拉 法 埃 脫 本 是 法 國 貴 族 ， 卻 放 棄 貴 族 身 分 ， 給 予 手 下 奴 隸 自 由 。 美 國 獨 立 戰 爭 爆 發 後 ， 他 捐 鉅 款 支 持 ， 並 親 率 軍 隊 抗 英 ， 曾 呼 籲 華 盛 頓 解 放 奴 隸 ， 只 是 華 盛 頓 沒 有 照 辦 。

「 太 過 仁 厚 」 之 罪

Military commander with the French forces in the American Revolutionary War, Armand Lauzun was a French peer who supported the French Revolution. In 1793, he was sent to Vendee, a coastal region in France, to help suppress a Royalist insurgency there. He gained several successes, but after he submitted his resignation, he was sent to the guillotine by the bloodthirsty French Revolutionary Committee because of his “undue leniency to the insurgents”.
When the executioner came to fetch Lauzun in his cell, he was found to be drinking wine and eating oysters. “Allow me to finish, citizen, and take a glass of this wine,” Lauzun told the executioner. “In your profession you must need courage.”

法 國 在 美 國 獨 立 戰 爭 中 出 兵 相 助 ， 美 國 曾 經 有 一 艘 戰 船 名 為 「 洛 贊 」 ， 以 紀 念 他 的 貢 獻 。 旺 代 叛 亂 其 實 不 只 是 保 王 黨 叛 亂 ： 當 地 不 少 平 民 不 堪 苛 政 ， 加 入 叛 軍 行 列 。 政 府 軍 所 到 之 處 ， 大 肆 屠 殺 。 老 人 被 集 體 活 埋 、 無 數 婦 女 被 強 姦 等 記 載 ， 成 為 法 國 大 革 命 史 上 可 恥 一 頁 。

《 雙 城 記 》 結 語 、 附 近

《 雙 城 記 》 最 後 兩 句 是 It is a far, far better thing that I do, than I have ever done; it is a far, far better rest that I go to than I have ever known ， 可 不 可 譯 做 「 這 是 我 所 做 最 好 的 一 件 事 ； 現 在 我 要 去 的 休 息 地 方 是 我 所 認 識 中 最 好 的 」 ？
《 雙 城 記 》 這 兩 句 結 語 ， 幾 乎 和 開 場 白 一 樣 膾 炙 人 口 。 小 說 配 角 卡 頓 律 師 為 救 意 中 人 的 丈 夫 ， 代 他 走 上 法 國 大 革 命 期 間 誅 殺 貴 族 的 斷 頭 臺 ， 死 前 心 想 ： 「 我 現 在 要 做 的 事 ， 比 我 以 前 所 做 的 事 都 美 好 得 多 ； 我 現 在 要 睡 的 覺 ， 比 我 向 來 所 睡 的 覺 安 詳 百 倍 。 」 讀 者 的 翻 譯 大 致 沒 有 錯 ， 但 「 最 好 」 語 氣 比 far, far better 弱 一 點 ， 把 rest 譯 做 「 休 息 地 方 」 也 不 大 妥 貼 。 「 休 息 地 方 」 是 resting place ， 例 如 ： The loving couple shared a final resting place （ 那 對 恩 愛 夫 妻 葬 在 一 起 ） 。 Final / last resting place （ 最 後 安 息 地 ） 即 「 墳 墓 」 。

Near 和 nearby 字 典 都 解 作 「 附 近 」 ， 兩 字 有 什 麼 分 別 ？
Near 、 nearby 都 可 作 副 詞 （ adverb ） ， 用 在 動 詞 之 後 ， 例 如 ： He lives near / nearby （ 他 住 在 附 近 ） 。
Near 、 nearby 還 可 作 形 容 詞 （ adjective ） ， 但 除 了 the near future （ 不 久 將 來 ） 、 a near relative （ 近 親 ） 等 一 些 固 定 說 法 ， near 不 可 用 在 名 詞 之 前 ， nearby 或 nearer 、 nearest 則 可 以 ， 例 如 ： He lives in a nearby house / in the nearest house （ 他 住 在 附 近 一 棟 房 子 / 最 近 這 的 那 棟 房 子 ） 。 英 文 不 可 說 a near house 之 類 。
此 外 ， nearby 不 是 介 系 詞 （ preposition ） ， 不 可 帶 出 名 詞 ， near 則 可 以 ， 例 如 ： He lives near us （ 他 住 在 我 們 附 近 ） 。
