US President Nixon’s involvement in the Watergate scandal led to his resignation in 1974, but the first major attack on his integrity came much earlier. In 1952, when he was the vice-presidential candidate on the Republican ticket, it was reported that there were some wealthy businessmen who contributed to a slush fund for Nixon’s private use.
The Republicans were thinking of removing him from their ticket when Nixon appeared on televison to defend himself. Having dwelt at length on his humble origins and his advancement in life through his own efforts, Nixon admitted that he had accepted a gift, namely a spaniel puppy. He told how his kids loved the dog and how, whatever anyone said, the family was going to keep it. Thousands of telegrams of support poured into Republican headquarters, and Nixon remained on the Republican ticket.

Richard Nixon was forced to resign the US presidency after Republican spies were caught breaking into the election headquarters of the Democratic Party in the Watergate building in Washington, DC, in 1972.
Years later, John Barrett, the first undercover officer to arrive on the scene, explained why the Watergate burglars had been apprehended: the lookout in the Howard Johnson Motel across the street did not see him arrive because he was busy watching on TV the 1958 thriller, Attack of the Puppet People.

Resign （ 辭 職 ） 作 及 物 （ transitive ） 和 不 及 物 （ intransitive ） 動 詞 都 可 以 ， 所 以 resign a post 和 resign from a post 兩 個 說 法 都 正 確 ， 例 如 ： He resigned his chairmanship / resigned from his chairmanship because of old age （ 他 因 年 老 ， 辭 去 主 席 職 位 ） 。 不 過 ， 說 退 出 某 個 組 織 ， 一 般 都 用 from ， 例 如 ： He resigned from the company （ 他 辭 去 公 司 的 職 位 ） 。
水 門 醜 聞 之 後 ， 政 治 醜 聞 常 以 gate 作 字 尾 ， 例 如 一 九 八 七 年 美 國 政 府 違 反 國 會 禁 令 秘 密 賣 武 器 給 伊 朗 ， 並 以 所 得 資 助 尼 加 拉 瓜 反 政 府 組 織 ， 這 事 件 就 稱 為 Irangate （ 伊 朗 門 ） 。

When Ronald Reagan succeeded Edmund Brown as Governor of California in 1967, Brown offered his replacement a word of advice: “There is a passage in War and Peace that every new governor with a big majority should tack on his office wall: Count Rostov, after weeks as the toast of elegant farewell parties, gallops off on his first cavalry charge and finds real bullets snapping at his ears. ‘Why, they’re shooting at me,’ he says. ‘Me — whom everyone loves!’ “

Toast 是 「 祝 酒 」 或 「 杯 」 ； 受 祝 酒 的 人 ， 因 此 也 叫 toast 。 引 伸 其 義 ， toast 可 指 在 某 處 備 受 讚 譽 或 愛 戴 者 ， 常 見 於 the toast of someone / something 這 說 法 ， 例 如 ： （ 1 ） Let’s drink a toast to the captain （ 我 們 為 隊 長 杯 吧 ） 。 （ 2 ） I proposed that the captain should be our toast （ 我 提 議 為 隊 長 杯 ） 。 （ 3 ） After the football match, our team was the toast of the university （ 足 球 比 賽 之 後 ， 我 們 這 支 球 隊 成 為 大 學 的 寵 兒 ） 。
說 馬 匹 奔 跑 ， 英 文 有 trot 、 canter 、 gallop 三 字 ： trot 跑 得 最 慢 ， gallop 跑 得 最 快 ， canter 則 是 指 trot 和 gallop 之 間 的 速 度 。

「 太 過 仁 厚 」 之 罪

Military commander with the French forces in the American Revolutionary War, Armand Lauzun was a French peer who supported the French Revolution. In 1793, he was sent to Vendee, a coastal region in France, to help suppress a Royalist insurgency there. He gained several successes, but after he submitted his resignation, he was sent to the guillotine by the bloodthirsty French Revolutionary Committee because of his “undue leniency to the insurgents”.
When the executioner came to fetch Lauzun in his cell, he was found to be drinking wine and eating oysters. “Allow me to finish, citizen, and take a glass of this wine,” Lauzun told the executioner. “In your profession you must need courage.”

法 國 在 美 國 獨 立 戰 爭 中 出 兵 相 助 ， 美 國 曾 經 有 一 艘 戰 船 名 為 「 洛 贊 」 ， 以 紀 念 他 的 貢 獻 。 旺 代 叛 亂 其 實 不 只 是 保 王 黨 叛 亂 ： 當 地 不 少 平 民 不 堪 苛 政 ， 加 入 叛 軍 行 列 。 政 府 軍 所 到 之 處 ， 大 肆 屠 殺 。 老 人 被 集 體 活 埋 、 無 數 婦 女 被 強 姦 等 記 載 ， 成 為 法 國 大 革 命 史 上 可 恥 一 頁 。
